Since the founding of the Junior Red Cross in 1917, youth and the Red Cross have been partners. Today, involving young people in the Red Cross is more important than ever, and we are able to provide young people with opportunities for education, training, and volunteer/community service.

Several years ago the Granite Chapter (then Concord Area Chapter) developed a Youth Board of Directors. More than 30 teenagers representing 12 local high schools currently serve on the Youth Board. The Youth Board of Directors identifies and develops local service projects that will meet a community need, provides an opportunity for teens to learn and practice leadership skills and provides an opportunity to work and collaborate with teens form other schools.

On Saturday, January 19, from 1 to 4 pm, the Granite Chapter's Youth Board will host a VOLUNTEER FAIR at the Chapter Office, 2 Maitland Street, Concord. This event is for the youth of our community to learn about volunteer opportunities available to them through various organizations including the Red Cross.

The event honors Martin Luther King Day and his principals of voluntary community service. The Youth Board will be sending ads and flyers out to area schools and groups within those schools. All local organizations are invited to participate.

Also the public can view the Youth Board's Red Cross-decorated CHRISTMAS TREE AT THE COMMON MAN INN in Plymouth during their "Festival of Trees" event through December 21. Cast a vote for it and the Chapter's Youth Board could win a prize to benefit their program!

Youth Board meetings are held every other Sunday afternoon. Call Sue Rivet, Youth Board Coordinator (603-225-6697 ext. 208) for more details - we look forward to having you join us!

For more information on the Youth Board or to become involved, please call the chapter or e-mail rivets@redcross-concordnh.org.
