For Your Community

From CPR, first aid and automated external defibrillator (AED) training to injury prevention courses, bloodborne pathogens training and community disaster education, you can team up with the most trusted name in health and safety training for nearly a century - the American Red Cross. Red Cross training offers complete, flexible programs that help you, your family and your community stay prepared for virtually any life-threatening situation. Build the program that works for you using our modular curriculum.

First Aid/CPR/AED for Schools and the Community (9 1/2 hours)

One of our most popular courses, it is great for community and family needs. This course combines lectures, demonstrations and video with hands-on training and practice. The CPR program includes Adult, Child, and Infant CPR with Adult and Child defribrillator training. Participants in this course learn to recognize and respond to emergencies including shock, cardiac and breathing emergencies for adults, children and infants, heat and cold emergencies, sudden illnesses and poisonings. Additionally, participants will learn first aid for everything from cuts and scrapes to muscle, bone and joint injuries.

Adult CPR with AED(4 hours)

For the person who only needs adult CPR/AED training, this hands-on skills training prepares them to respond to breathing and cardiac emergencies in victims aged 8 and above. Includes AED defibrilator training for adults.

Infant and Child CPR (4 1/2 hours)

Designed for those who care for children, either full time or occasionally, this course teaches participants how to recognize and care for breathing and cardiac emergencies in infants and children up to 8 years. Participants take home a refresher skills card as well as information about preventing injuries. Infant CPR is also available separately as a 3 _ hour course that applies to infants up to 12 months; Child CPR is also available separately and applies to children ages 1 to 8 years.

Sport Safety (6 1/2 hours)

The American Red Cross and the United States Olympic Committee have joined forces to develop an exciting course for coaches who want to keep their athletes safe. This course covers sports-related injury prevention, first aid care and Adult CPR/AED. An optional Child CPR component may also be taken. This course is a must for coaches, officials and parents of athletes.

Babysitter's Training (7 1/2 hours)

The Babysitter's Training course has a unique interactive, educational format that tasks youth, ages 11 - 14 years of age, with activities such as identifying safety problems around the house and yard and selecting age-appropriate toys and games for children in their care. Participants learn by doing. This format, along with the course video and an enthusiastic instructor, keeps the interest of the babysitters and provides a meaningful classroom experience

Safe on My Own (2 1/2 hours)

Youth ages 8 to 11 learn to respond safely to a variety of "home alone" situations, including role-play activities about answering the phone and door, discussions on gun and Internet safety, personal safety and first aid.

Basic Aid Training (B.A.T.) (6 hours)

This course, which may be led by any responsible adult, introduces 8-10 year-olds to the emergency action steps, Check, Call, Care as well as to basic first aid procedures. An activity book with puzzles and games teaches children how to prevent injuries and what to do in an emergency.

First Aid for Children Today (F.A.C.T.) (10 - 14 hours)

The FACT Critter Clan leads kids, aged 5 - 8, through health promotion and injury prevention activities. Its environmental theme teaches safety in a non-threatening way. Topics include:

  • Hygiene and health habits
  • First aid
  • Personal safety and Injury prevention.

Pet First Aid is a handy reference guide for cat and dog emergencies. Created by the American Red Cross and The Humane Society of the United States, Pet First Aid provides assistance to people whose pets are ill or injured.

Water Safety Instructor Course

The American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor Course provides instructor candidates the training needed to teach courses in the American Red Cross Swimming and Water Safety Program by developing their understanding of how to use the course materials, how to conduct training sessions and how to evaluate participants' progress. Concepts and features of the Water Safety Instructor course include:

  • New minimum age prerequisite of 16 years of age to enter the course.
  • Shortened course time of approximately 30 hours (including pre-course session).

Clearly described and applied teaching strategies, including:

  • Explain, demonstrate and practice
  • Task setting
  • Station teaching
  • Guided discovery.
  • New instructor manual provides tools and information needed to plan and conduct courses. A CD-ROM will be packaged with the instructor's manual with information and tools for individuals managing a swim program, as well as conducting and administering learn-to-swim courses.
  • New video segments that bring to life the realities of what to expect from their students throughout the levels for the brand new instructor.
  • Video segments that focus on effective class management and effective teaching strategies in the aquatic setting.
  • Various video segments show typical examples of basic skills and common progressions including breath control, swimming on the front and swimming on the back.
  • Video segments also show some typical performance of the strokes as they progress through the levels. This video depiction helps instructor candidates visualize the description of the strokes in the written skills performance criteria charts that they will then be able to use when evaluating their students' performance.
  • Supported by video, the instructor candidates work to develop their ability to observe and assess, often referred to as having a photographic eye, which will help them to identify weaknesses and determine how to intervene to move their students to the next level.
  • Learning activities, games and drills are built in throughout the course. Some activities are led by the instructor trainer, while others are led by instructor candidates. This helps instructor candidates improve their strokes and understand how to integrate activities, games and drills effectively into their teaching.

There are multiple opportunities for instructor candidates to practice their teaching skills through formal practice teaching assignments as well as leading mini-lessons. Whether you want to splash around with kids and teach them to swim, help children or adults refine their strokes or teach diving safety techniques, you can do it as an American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor. Qualified instructors can also help prepare swim coaches to prevent and respond to emergency situations.
