Kaplan Wins National Volunteer Awards
The Concord Area Chapter of the American Red Cross is pleased to announce that Youth Board of Directors member Emily Kaplan has been named a runner-up for The Prudential Spirit of Community Awards in New Hampshire. Kaplan, a senior at Franklin High School, will receive an engraved bronze Distinguished Finalist Medal for her role in organizing a campaign to collect donations of toys, games, music and movies for patients at the Children’s Hospital of Dartmouth late last year. Having visited the hospital with her family, she became interested in helping to make hospital stays for children and adolescents more positive. This gave rise to a drive for her Red Cross Youth Board members to collect Christmas presents from within the membership and their schools.
“Emily’s desire to make a difference in the lives of chronically ill children is exemplary for all of us, particularly because of her young age,” said Priscilla Greene, Executive Director of the Concord Area Chapter of the American Red Cross. “This project demonstrates the dedication and commitment she and all of our Youth Board members have for improving our community.”
The Prudential Spirit of Community Awards in New Hampshire is part of a nationwide initiative created to recognize young people involved in community service. Kaplan is one of three high school students in New Hampshire to be honored for their work.
Kaplan also qualified for the President’s Volunteer Service Award, which recognizes Americans of all ages who have volunteered significant amounts of their time to serving their communities.
The Youth Board of Directors is a youth-oriented leadership program that joins together high school students from area high schools. Their mission is to provide service to their communities both locally and globally, as well as to provide leadership opportunities for our area’s young adults. The Concord Chapter services over 128 communities with representatives on our Youth Board from many of these towns.
