Governor John Lynch visited with Red Cross disaster
volunteers during the April 2007 Nor’easter Floods
Governor John Lynch signed a proclamation recognizing March
as American Red Cross Month. This follows in a tradition dating back to 1943,
when President Franklin Delano Roosevelt signed the first such proclamation.
This March, the Red Cross is especially honoring the
volunteers and employees who demonstrate their compassion and dedication every
day by carrying out the humanitarian mission of the Red Cross. In the
proclamation, Governor Lynch noted that “the Red Cross in New Hampshire has
reflected that compassion by helping and supporting New Hampshire residents to
respond to and prepare for disasters since 1917.”
Last year the Red Cross Chapters provided assistance to
victims of 363 disasters in New Hampshire, an average of almost one disaster
response every day of the year. A majority of those disasters were home fires.
The chapters also assisted 558 military families in need, and trained more than
41,700 people in lifesaving skills. Generous blood donors gave more than 70,000
pints of the “gift of life” during blood drives in New Hampshire.
“In celebrating American Red Cross Month, we celebrate the
humanitarian and volunteer spirit here in New Hampshire and all across
America…and urge all citizens to continue to donate blood, volunteer their time,
and generously support the American Red Cross and its local chapters,” the
Governor concluded in the proclamation.
“The Red Cross thanks Governor Lynch and all New Hampshire
residents for their support,” said Maria White, New Hampshire Regional Executive
Director of the American Red Cross. “We are proud to be the place where everyday
people can do extraordinary things. We look forward to ongoing support from our
communities so that we can continue to offer lifesaving services everyday.”
Throughout the month of March, more than 700 Red Cross
chapters and blood regions across the country celebrate with special events,
trainings and fundraisers that give the public a chance to learn more about the
Red Cross and all the ways they can be involved. For more information about
