New Hampshire’s Governor John
Lynch met during March – American Red Cross Month – with Maria White, the newly
appointed Regional Executive Director for the American Red Cross in New
Hampshire.
The Governor welcomed White to her
new position with the Red Cross, and restated his long-standing support and
appreciation for the work of the Red Cross in New Hampshire.
During the meeting, they discussed
statewide disaster response and specifically the response to widespread power
outages from the ice storm last December. The Red Cross and the State emergency
response agencies worked closely together in coordinating the disaster relief.
During the two weeks of power
outages, Dan Brennan, the Emergency Services Director for the Granite Chapter,
represented the Red Cross on the State’s Emergency Operations Center. White was
in daily communication with the Governor during the height of the disaster. The
Red Cross opened and operated 15 shelters and worked with towns in support of
about 30 community shelters. Disaster volunteers distributed food at the
shelters and through mobile feeding vehicles in the affected communities.
“We are fortunate to have a
Governor who understands and supports the Red Cross mission,” said White after
the meeting. “The Red Cross Chapters in New Hampshire will continue to work with
the State emergency management staff in assuring that our residents receive
disaster relief when needed and training in advance to best prepare their
families and communities for future disasters.”
