November is National
Youth Involvement Month at the American Red Cross. The Granite
Chapter is pleased to have an active and enthusiastic Youth Board.
We celebrate our youth volunteers who support the Red Cross mission.
Here’s a note from the Youth Board about their work.
This year the
Youth Board’s goal is to bring awareness to the community about the
programs offered by the Red Cross, especially on how to live safely
and responsibly. We attended the Fire Prevention event, hosted by
Fire Departments of the area. We made hanging mobiles for patients
at Concord Hospital. Our latest event on Halloween was a great
success. Not only did we have a blast participating in the Halloween
Howl, but we also made people aware that Red Cross information can
affect their lives and the lives of many others. During this year we
are going to raise money through events including bake sales,
raffles, and present-wrapping. We also want to bring awareness about
malaria outbreaks worldwide. Whatever we do, we hope to make a
positive difference.
Below are photos of
the Youth Board’s participation in downtown Concord’s Halloween Howl
on Main Street. Bagel Works had kindly agreed to have the Red Cross
tent set up in front of their store. The Youth Board members dressed
in vintage Red Cross uniforms, as nurses and an ambulance driver.
They handed out candy and safety brochures to over 500 small ghouls,
princesses and other monsters.

The Granite Chapter is not the only Red
Cross chapter with active youth. Here are a couple of other young
people throughout the country who have supported the Red Cross
mission with their efforts and ideas.
Monique Gooch, a volunteer with the
American Red Cross of South Central Kentucky in Bowling Green, used
the public relations skills she is learning at Western Kentucky
University to support the chapter’s successful public art
fundraiser.
Justin Alejandro one day accompanied
his dad, a disaster volunteer with the Dallas Area Chapter, to the
scene of a Red Cross flood response. Justin worked into the night
setting up cots and handing out blankets at the emergency shelter.
Now a college student majoring in emergency response, Justin has
become an experienced disaster responder. This year Selecciones,
the Spanish-language edition of the Reader’s Digest, recognized
Justin as one of five U. S. Latin youth volunteers improving the
communities in which they live.
There are hundreds of stories the
American Red Cross could tell about our youth and young adult
volunteers; they are unfolding every day and they all speak about
youth’s passion for serving. We could fill a book with these
stories.
All of these young people know that the
Red Cross is relevant to their young lives. We celebrate and support
their good work, not just in November but year round!
