March is Red Cross Month

image of Red Cross balloons. CONCORD - Mar 8, 2007 - When neighbors help neighbors in emergencies, there's reason to celebrate. That is why every U.S. president since Franklin D. Roosevelt has declared March as Red Cross Month. President George W. Bush said in this year's proclamation,

"We are grateful for the tireless work of the volunteers and staff of the American Red Cross. During this month, we pay tribute to this remarkable organization..."

Governor John Lynch also paid tribute to the work and services of the Red Cross chapters in New Hampshire. In his proclamation of March as Red Cross Month, he said,

"The American Red Cross in New Hampshire has always been a place where citizens join together, where generosity and compassion of the American people finds purpose."

The Red Cross Concord Area Chapter and Greater White Mountain Service Unit have served our communities long and well, covering disaster services, information for emergency preparedness, CPR and first aid training, blood drives, aid to military families and many opportunities for volunteer service. This chapter serves 128 towns in the Concord Area, Lakes Region and North Country.

With the news-catching drama of disaster events, it is easy to overlook the facts that Red Cross services are performed largely by volunteers; disaster relief is free to victims; and financial support comes mostly from the generosity of people right here in this community.

Thanks to the commitment of these volunteers, area families have received critical help when disasters, including home fires, floods and ice storms, have struck. Our community is a safer place because over 14,000 of our neighbors have received Red Cross training in lifesaving skills like first aid, CPR, and water safety. Our Licensed Nurse Assistant training program made it possible for 464 LNAs to receive their license last year.

What makes these achievements worth celebrating is that each is truly a gift given by a member of this community. The Red Cross is nothing more, and nothing less, than the goodwill of our neighbors, coming together in one place.

So give your favorite Red Cross supporter a pat on the back this March. Better yet, contact us at 1-800-464-6692 and find out how you can get involved.
