Youth Board Welcomes New Coordinator
 |
| Becky Coliandris has been hired as the new Red Cross Youth Board Coordinator. She will be providing both enthusiasm and leadership opportunities to the group of young people who plan and participate in community service activities. |
CONCORD - August 7, 2006 - A college student from Plymouth State University, Becky Coliandris, is the new coordinator of the Red Cross Youth Board for the Concord Area Chapter. The Youth Board is a group of committed and motivated high school students dedicated to working on issues in their community. Throughout the school year, they plan and participate in an array of exciting service activities.
One of their regular events is the Refugees Program in Concord, hosted by Lutheran Social Services. At Christmas time, Youth Board members spend time collecting, wrapping, and delivering gifts to families in the area who are newly arrived and striving to get settled in the community.
Currently, the Youth Board is exploring the idea of fundraising in new and exciting ways, both for worldwide causes and local issues. Initial ideas are being discussed. The Youth Board members will debate these ideas, problem-solve their way through them, figure out logistics, then participate in the final well thought-through events.
In order for the activities of the Youth Board to materialize, the members need some key ingredients: contacts in the community and the Chapter, guidance from their coordinator and others working with them, and (the most crucial) a willingness to learn leadership skills.
"One of my many objectives is to include leadership skills into every aspect of this group in a fun and exciting way," said Becky. "I am going to do this through guest speakers, practicing different techniques as well as incorporating organizational skills."
The Concord Area Chapter serves communities from Bow to the Canadian border. Because of this large area, Becky hopes to add a new group of Youth Board members in the northern part of New Hampshire. This will help students to network within their own communities, participate in local retreats and provide fun opportunities for personal growth during the high school years.
Becky's enthusiasm for leading these groups of young people is evident. "Although this is a new position for me, I am very excited to explore many ideas with the Youth Board," she said, "and put all my effort into ensuring a successful year!"
