Former Red Cross Chairman Dies at 98CONCORD - Dec 28, 2006 - A long- term American Red Cross advocate and former chairman, Frank Stanton, passed away recently at his home in Boston, Mass. Stanton, a Michigan native, was appointed Chairman of the American Red Cross by President Richard Nixon and served from 1973-1979. Prior to his appointment, Stanton was an active volunteer in the areas of public information and fundraising. As Chairman, Stanton came to be known as a hands-on leader who broadened the organization's involvement internationally and renewed the Board of Governor's involvement in Red Cross operations. Stanton was also highly acclaimed for his work as President of CBS for over 25 years, where he turned the network into a symbol of broadcasting excellence and earned a Peabody Award for distinguished achievement in broadcast journalism.
