Training in Incident Command System for Red Cross Volunteers

CONCORD - August 28, 2006 - The New Hampshire Fire Academy in Concord has agreed to train Red Cross Chapter volunteers in the nationwide Incident Command System (ICS). The courses will include IS 100 (Introduction to ICS), ICS 200 (Basic ICS) and IS 700 (Introduction to National Incident Management System, NIMS).

Although these courses area available online, students often prefer a classroom setting. The Chapter will be scheduling this training in cooperation with the Fire Academy in October. There needs to be at least 20 people for each class. If you are interested and want more information, call Kay Mahoney at the Red Cross Chapter (1-800-464-6692 or 603-225-6697).

NIMS compliance is important for people working in the field of disaster preparedness. The Red Cross urges its Emergency Services staff and disaster volunteers to be certified in this program. ICS is part of the National Incident Management System (NIMS).

IS-100 describes the history, features and principles, and organizational structure of ICS. It also explains the relationship between ICS and NIMS.

ICS 200 is designed to enable personnel to operate efficiently during an incident or event within the ICS.

IS-700 explains the purpose, principles, key components and benefits of NIMS. The course also contains "Planning Activity," giving you an opportunity to complete some planning tasks during this course.
