Red Cross Was Ready for ErnestoCONCORD - September 6, 2006 - The motto of "Be Prepared" was the theme last week as Red Cross volunteers mobilized for landfall of Hurricane Ernesto. Instead the storm moved north as a tropical storm but still strong enough to dump flooding rains along the Carolina, coast. Hurricane force winds never hit the Florida coast. In anticipation of the hurricane's impact, the Concord Area Chapter had sent seven disaster volunteers to points south, including, Louisiana, Mississippi, Texas and Florida. As Ernesto became a non event our volunteers headed home. However, the services of one volunteer, Laurie Sargent, were sought on the flight home when a child vomited. Our volunteers are always ready to serve! The mission of the American Red Cross is to be there and prepared, whether the crisis develops or not. The Disaster Services Program and its many dedicated volunteers are proactive, rather than reactive. They are there are ready, usually before a disaster strikes. The deployment of the volunteers is a valuable activity even when it turns out to be a drill rather than a full response. These seven volunteers are now all the better trained to be ready for the next one.
