Local Fires Keep Disaster Teams BusyCONCORD - Dec 12, 2006 - The first week of December proved to be a busy one for Disaster Action Team (DAT) volunteers in the Lakes Region and Concord area. On Saturday, December 2, a fire was reported at a single family home in Franklin. The residents were not at home at the time but the structure was a total loss. Two DAT volunteers were called to assist the mother and two children, ages 5 and 7, with food and clothing. They were given lodging from friends. The next day before dawn in Laconia, three DAT volunteers responded to an apartment fire. The apartment sustained heavy water damage. The one adult male resident was unharmed, but the Red Cross provided him with needed lodging. Fires are the most common disasters requiring Red Cross action and response, especially at this time of year. Members of the Disaster Action Teams are volunteers specially trained in disaster response and case management; they are available whenever needed. Team members assist any individual or family in crisis, providing immediate needs of food, clothing and shelter. All Red Cross disaster assistance is free and made possible by donations of funds from the public and volunteer time from local communities. If you would like to learn more about your chapter or how to become a DAT member, please contact the Chapter office at 603-225-6697.
