CONCORD - September 14, 2006 - On September 13th, the United Way of Merrimack County hosted the 15th Annual "Day of Caring." More than 400 volunteers from area companies and businesses volunteered their time at local non-profit agencies to help with needed tasks. The Day of Caring began at 7:30 am with a breakfast for all at Camp Spalding in Concord.

The American Red Cross, Concord Area Chapter and Greater White Mountain CSDU, was a recipient agency for these special volunteers. Three volunteers spent the morning at the chapter office, scrubbing cots and inventorying and assembling kits for shelter managers.

Lynn Lessard from the New Hampshire Local Government Center, and Dorothy Bryant and Karen Richardson, both from the Lutheran Social Services, were up to their elbows in soapy water in the parking lot as they scrubbed a long row of green cots that are distributed by the chapter to emergency shelters. Then the volunteers were indoors, going through boxes of essential supplies and forms that are given to managers when shelters are opened by the Red Cross.

"Their help was very valuable," said Susan Rivet, the Chapter's Volunteer Director. "They were doing essential tasks that are needed for the Chapter to be ready in the event of an emergency," she added.

The American Red Cross, Concord Area Chapter and Greater White Mountain CSDU, is a community partner with and receives funds through the United Way of Merrimack County.
