Blood Services Meeting Addresses Pandemic Flu

CONCORD - September 18, 2006 - The Northeast Region of the American Red Cross Blood Services held its annual meeting on Thursday, September 14, at the office of the Red Cross Concord Area Chapter and Greater White Mountain certified services delivery unit. The theme for this year's meeting was preparedness and response to a potential avian flu pandemic.
Steve Tomajczyk, coordinator for New Hampshire's Homeland Security & Emergency Preparedness, was the first speaker. With his experience and knowledge of preparedness for a pandemic, he set the tone of the meeting with an overview of the characteristics of the avian flu and its distribution. Colleen Fitzpatrick, Director of Emergency Services from the Great Bay Chapter of the Red Cross, spoke about preparedness scenarios and common sense approaches to flu defense. Dan Brennan, Director of Emergency Services from the Concord Area chapter of the Red Cross, gave a PowerPoint presentation on the response and responsibilities of the Red Cross in the event of a flu pandemic.
The meeting was attended by blood services staff from Connecticut, Rhode Island, Massachusetts, Vermont, Maine and New Hampshire.
